On October 14, 2009, Paul Broun, Sue Myrick (North Carolina 9th), John Shadegg (Arizona 3rd) and Trent Franks (Arizona 2nd) held a press conference in which they accused the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) of seeking to undermine the security of the United States and promoted an Islamophobic book by Paul Sperry entitled Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America . They made three demands:

  1. The US Department of Justice to share with each member of Congress and their Chiefs of Staff an executive summary of the findings that led them to name CAIR as a co-conspirator in a terrorism case.
  2. The House Sergeant at Arms to work with the Staff Directors and Committee Chairmen of the House Judiciary, Homeland Security and Intelligence Committees to see if CAIR was successful in placing interns in any of said committees since the drafting of this memo in January of 2007.
  3. The Internal Revenue Service to launch a full investigation into the legality of the lobbying activities of CAIR to judge if they are in violation of their federal non-profit status.

Here are some quotes:

1:00: Sue Myrick: "About a year ago, I learned that CAIR was trying to infiltrate the offices of key members of Congress by placing interns in the offices." Judiciary, Intelligence Homeland Security Committees

7:20 This is one of many book that have been published about our enemy.

8:50 [... CAIR is allegedly targeting members of Congress on these homeland-secruity related committees in order to influence policies of those members. If an organization that is connected to or supports terrorism is running influence operations or planting spies in key national security related Congressional offices, I think this needs to be made known."

9:50 "I call upon the American people to demand to know what CAIR is all about. Let us focus on those who want to do us harm, who want to destroy our way of life, that hate women, that hate our freedom, that hate everything America was founded upon, and want to destroy that and want to put themselves in power here in this country, as well as all the countries around the world."

11:15 It becomes doubly important then to examine the challenges inside this country. It is unnerving to say the least that there will be members of groups catalyzed by CAIR coming into Congressional offices trying to change our public policy and trying to influence how we respond to this great danger. Somebody said a long time ago that it's always the water on the inside of a ship that sinks it. It is very important that we recognize the internal threat that groups like CAIR represent and groups like them.

12:11 I hope that we can all work together to engage the moderate Muslim community as they should be engaged. Groups like the American Islamic Democracy Forum, Zuhdi Jasser. ... I truly believe that's it's important for us to engage those Muslim organizations that love freedom, those Muslim in America that love freedom.
